A deeply disturbing incident of sexual violence has been reported from Bangladesh’s Jhenaidah district, where a 40-year-old Hindu widow was allegedly subjected to brutal torture, gang rape, and public humiliation by two local men. The accused reportedly tied the woman to a tree, assaulted her, and forcibly cut her hair before leaving her severely injured. Police have arrested both suspects following the survivor’s complaint.
According to local media reports, the incident occurred on Saturday night in the Kaliganj municipal area of Jhenaidah. The victim had allegedly been facing harassment from the accused for over two and a half years. The accused, identified as Shahin and his associate, were known to the woman, as she had purchased a two-storey house along with approximately 300 decimals of land from Shahin and his brother for nearly 20 lakh taka several years ago.
Following the property transaction, Shahin allegedly began making repeated inappropriate advances toward the woman. When she firmly rejected his behavior, he is said to have continued harassing, intimidating, and mentally torturing her in various ways. Despite her resistance, the harassment reportedly escalated over time.
On the night of the incident, the accused allegedly abducted the woman and carried out the violent assault. Reports state that she was tied to a tree, brutally beaten, raped, and humiliated by having her hair forcibly cut. Due to the severity of the assault, the woman lost consciousness at the scene.
Local residents later discovered her in an injured and unconscious condition and immediately rushed her to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for treatment. Doctors attending to her revealed that the woman initially hesitated to disclose the full details of the assault due to trauma and fear.
Dr Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman, Superintendent of Jhenaidah General Hospital, said that while the victim did not immediately report the crime, medical examinations later confirmed that she had been subjected to severe physical and sexual violence.
Following her recovery, the survivor approached the Kaliganj police station and filed a formal complaint naming Shahin and his accomplice. Jhenaidah Additional Superintendent of Police Bilal Hossain confirmed that the complaint has been officially registered and a thorough investigation is underway.
“The accused have been arrested, and strict legal action will be taken against all those responsible after completion of the investigation,” Bilal Hossain stated.
The arrests were made from the Kaliganj area shortly after the complaint was lodged. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of minority women in Bangladesh, with many demanding swift justice and stronger protection for vulnerable communities.
