Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over reports alleging an attack on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that diplomacy remains the only credible path to lasting peace.
Reacting to the developments, the Prime Minister said he was worried about actions that could further escalate tensions amid the ongoing conflict. He stressed the importance of continued diplomatic engagement and urged all parties to avoid steps that could undermine peace efforts.
In a statement shared on social media, Modi said that targeting the residence of a head of state is a matter of serious concern and reiterated that sustained diplomatic efforts offer the most viable route toward ending hostilities.
The remarks came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Ukraine had attempted to strike President Putinâs state residence in Russiaâs Novgorod region. According to Lavrov, the alleged incident could influence Moscowâs stance in ongoing negotiations.
Former US President Donald Trump also reacted to the reports, stating that he was âvery angryâ after learning about the alleged attack during a phone conversation with President Putin. Trump said that while military actions are ongoing, attacking a leaderâs residence crosses a line and is inappropriate at a sensitive moment.
China also responded, urging all sides to avoid escalation and prevent the conflict from expanding further.
Lavrov alleged that Ukraine launched 91 long-range drones toward the residence between December 28 and 29. He said all drones were intercepted by Russian air defense systems and described the incident as reckless, warning that it would not go unanswered. He further termed the alleged action as an act of state terrorism.
It remains unclear whether President Putin was present at the residence at the time of the alleged incident. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied the accusations, calling them completely false and accusing Russia of lacking genuine intent to end the war.
